These buckle tabs don't have to be wool or leather and don't have to be heavy; they do need to be reasonably strong. I like nylon raincoat material. Nylon web strap will also work but I think it's overkill.

Thank you for all of your replies. I'm going to take my kilt down to the alteration place and see what they think. I have found a couple of places that sell kilt straps with the buckle side having the leather tab. If you know of any places that sell kilt straps with both sides having leather straps, by all means, post!

Take your pick of thin or thick straps and buckle sets. I had a local alterations / reweaving place replace the original suede straps on my kilt for about $35 for 3. HighlandXpress corrected the placement of my straps on my Lochcarron casual kilt which had fabric tabs.

This was a question that I had some time ago. I went ahead and replaced the origional leather buckles with an 8-yard hand sewn Tewksbury in my family tartan.
Seriously though, I just left them alone, it's a pub kilt.
I do recommend the Tartan Thistle. It's here in the Pacific NW, and Angus is top-notch, super helpful, warm and welcoming, etc.. They're at all the games up here, and are always good for a chat. And you can order online, so support a great small celtic shop!
