Here's mine. You hang it by the metal hook in the armhole opening of your waistcoat or jacket.

Was a Sgian Dubh not originaly kept concealed in the armpit. Please note italics to subtly raise awareness about the legality of carrying of a concealed weapon in public.

Legend has it (or so I have heard) that the sgian dbu is the sgian achlais.
the concealed blade was removed from hiding and tucked into the stocking top as a gesture that there were no hidden weapons.

<< ...that the sgian dbu is the sgian achlais. >>

That's how I learnt it. I'd speculate Victorian custom had much to do with sgian evolution that exists to the present.

Wouldn't you think they would have found a knife stored in the armpit region a bit distasteful?

There were as many methods for Highlanders to tuck a blade in their armpit region as there are today.

And wasn't the jimping on the backside of the sgians a Victorian addition as well?

<<...isn't it remarkable that there wouldn't be ONE example...>>

    Perhaps this'll help...

Actually an example of a garment, rather than the knife that's the missing piece of the puzzle.

There're many extant examples of sgians, what's not absolute is an item that would demonstrate to us how Highlanders supposedly wore the knives in their armpit regions.

    Slainte,
    steve
