I follow you on the oil tanning.
The issue I'm having is that my sporran has a touch of red to it's brown. I just didn't see any belts that color, so I was going to look else where.
However, if someone told me I could use a sporran belt that went with the color of brown on my sporran, instead of having to exactly match, I might be happier. I don't know if that is OK up on the snob level though...
Thankfully, I have most of the basic leather working tools that I would need if I have to build my own belt from scratch.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

That's blooming perfect! I'm looking for just such a thing myself. I'll visit the local saddler as soon as I can!
The thing about the sporran strap that I received with my latest (and first) sporran is that the buckle is at the small of my back. Not very comfortable or aesthetic at all.

That was a great idea, I too wanted a leather casual sporran strap, needed one in black and one in brown. Went to goodwill and got the shoulder straps off of a couple of hand bags. Had to do some looking to find the right length and clips but for about ten bucks got two leather straps.

Great job on the DIY and nicely timed - I'm in the middle of researching the best way of making a reasonably-priced sporran belt myself so might just use your method. Thanks!

I thought about a purse strap, too, but couldn't find one.

I have used a horse reins as well. Both ends were somewhat decoratively cut and easliy set up for clips. I just cut them down and used a conway buckle in the rear...it is unobtrusive and gives it some adjustibility. If I ever figure out how to post pics I will put a few on here.

You might consider stopping by the ladies sections of some of the stores you are in. There are often thin belts (1 inch or 3/4 of an inch).
there is often a variety of colors. You can often find some interesting chain belts for formal sporran belts.
