Personally, I like the idea of a sporran with a contemporary kilt. To me, traditional accessories help associate an otherwise untraditional garment with a traditional kilt. Granted, my only non-wool, non-tartan kilt is an X-kilt with no pockets, but if I were to purchase another type of contemporary kilt I would forgo the cargo pockets and wear my sporran proudly.

If the kilt has pockets (my three UKs), then I don't wear a sporran.

For me, no such thing as too many pockets.
I think a plain looking sporran or the ones from SWK would look good with a UK and the like.

I decide this on 3 criteria:
Function
Appearance or Esthetics
Comfort
With the pocket options that contemporary kilts like FK's and UK's come with there is little functional need for a sporran. As long as you can carry everything you need in the pockets you won't need a sporran.
Esthetically there is little need for a sporran as well. Traditional kilts are very long and it can look odd having such a long portion of the body covered in tartan or solid cloth without something to break up the length. Traditionally that is done by wearing a wide belt and/or in conjunction with a sporran. These accessories bring the outfit and the overall image back in to a proportion that is attractive. Contemporary kilts are typically a little shorter than traditional kilts so there is less need to address proportions. Even if you did need a little extra capacity, a backpack might be a better choice than a tasseled sporran.
Comfort is my last criteria. That's completely preference but if function and appearance of my outfit are both satisfied, I'll opt against a sporran most of the time.

I sometimes wear a Freelander sporran with a Freedom cargo kilt if I am going to be a way for a full day and need to carry keys, money, tickets, camera, batteries, etc.. The kilt has two rear cargo pockets. As already said, there is no such thing as too many pockets.

Just as I thought... alot of great opinions, and I am still stuck. You see here is my dilemma: I currently own a tan AK and a Nightstalker SWK. I am looking into purchasing a new kilt and/or sporran. I am trying to decide on contemporary or traditional as far as kilts go. I am considering sporrans that would go with either. Even if I get a contemporary with pockets I like having a sporran for carrying stuff that doesn't really fit in kilt pockets. Jeesh... I'll keep looking and decide soon I'm sure.
