I agree about mixed tartans. Wear the one you want, and then get the groomsmen to wear one with significance to them or wear a generic tartan. It doesn't have to be uniform.

Yes, it is customary in the US to have the brides maids all match and the Grooms party to all match. There is nothing customary to have a kilted wedding in the US. So, make up some rules and go with it. I have a daughter being wed next month. I am making a MacPherson Hunging Ancient tartan kilt for the wedding. It has blue, orange, black and grey. It looks a little purple so it may match the brides maids' gowns. I will have a PC, so I won't be mistook for the wrong party.

I would say as you have connections to two Irish tartans, choose the one you like best.
If the groomsmen are going to buy their kilts they need to choose their own tartans. If they are going to rent, it is doubtful that they will find Irish tartans, they will have to have what is available.
I love mixed tartans at weddings, it makes for beautiful wedding photographs.

These folks rent kilts in Irish National tartan.

I don't know anything about this particular vendor, so I am not endorsing. Just providing info.

Just a quick two cents, I had a Irish-born landlord for many years named Dillon. He was from Cork. Coincidence?

For y'all that are family, and/or have your own kilts, go with what you've got or you find most natural. For those that have/choose to rent, I'd also go with one of the national-type tartans. At my wedding, I was the only one who owned one, so I wore my Robertson Ancient Hunting, and all the groomsmen wore Flower of Scotland. Fortunately they were pretty close. And yes, the bridesmaids' dresses matched the tartans.

All great info! I know I'm going to buy my kilt, and I suspect my brother is going to as well.
That leads to two important questions... recommendations for places to purchase a kilt and could anyone recommend a rental place local to Boston?
Thanks for all the great help so far, I suspect if I hadn't started looking around here we'd have ended up pleats to front in my brother's wedding photos!

Don't overlook that there are two Co Cork tartans - House of Edgar and the Marton Mills County Crest collection. Rocky at USA Kilts made me a Co Antrim from the Marton Mills tartan - it's got more 'punch' that the House of Edgar.

Of course, one could argue that the more "earthy" tones of the HoE's Co. Cork tartan captures the landscape of Ireland.
