My Grandfather's kilt pin is silver, with Hall Marks, and I wear it with pride whenever I wear the kilt and I have to look HARD to find them and I know where they are! A Wee tip---- if by chance your pin is silver, PLEASE GO STEADY with the polish. Resist, at all costs, the military idea of polishing(daily) anything that moves and everything that does not!
Ah, Jock, you know the military compulsion well! But fortunately, I do know that I wouldn't want to go heavy on that pin. I like the slightly tarnished look on it; makes it obvious it is an antique.
I'm still at work, so I will have to check for the hallmarks later on. Could you tell me where you found the hallmarks on your Grandfather's Pin? Might make my search a little easier. Certainly hope that I don't have to remove it from the kilt in order to find any marks.

Oh crumbs! Right then, take the pointed bit,the bit that goes through the kilt cloth, look at the underside of that pointed bar just before it meets the clip bit, just there ,the point will be sticking out from the other side of the clip. Yours, if there is one to find, could be anywhere.I don't think there is a "right or wrong" place. If you did not know, you would just think that it was a rough bit on the pin. Under a jewellers lense the marks are as clear as day! There should(I think) be four seperate marks in a row. Good hunting!
