    YES! Found Antique Kilt Pin

My wife thought that her Mum had an old military type kilt pin(safety style), but we weren't sure where it was. Well, this morning I found it. I am really glad I did; I loved her Mum dearly, and it means a great deal to me to wear this on my kilt. God only knows how old it is, the fetching Mrs. Birddog says it is atleast as old as she is.

ehiker, it is just like any other military type kilt pin, but I will include a photo when I get a chance. It's such a shame her Mum passed; I would love to know if there is any history to this pin.

Well done on finding the kilt pin. I don't want to get your hopes up, but, it might be silver and it might have been made in the UK, in which case there is a good chance there will be Hall Marks on it. Other countries have Hall Marks too, but in the UK you would be able to see who the maker was, a date letter, usually, but not always, where it was made. You may need a strong magnifying glass.Good luck.

Jock, I didn't see any hallmarks on it, but I can look again. And, since my wife's Mum was from Watford, Hertfordshire, I would say that it is highly likely that it is from the UK! I wonder if there is a good way of telling whether it is silver. It has a slight tarnish to it, but nothing that stands out to me that it is all silver. The tarnish could just be because it is old. Any definitive way to tell for sure?

For any silver object to be SOLD as silver that was,I think, MADE in the UK, will have Hall Marks,by law. This has more or less been true for several centuries.IF the object is silver but has no Hall Mark it can only be sold as "white metal".If there are any marks on your pin you may need to look VERY carefully. In all honesty though, there are thousands of steel or crome plated kilt pins about.

My Grandfather's kilt pin is silver, with Hall Marks, and I wear it with pride whenever I wear the kilt and I have to look HARD to find them and I know where they are! A Wee tip---- if by chance your pin is silver, PLEASE GO STEADY with the polish. Resist, at all costs, the military idea of polishing(daily) anything that moves and everything that does not!
