Folding Knife as a Sgian Dubh?

That I think is the better of the two ideas (the other is making a sheath for the locked open knife). Most of the artisans I am familiar with would be more than delighted to do something like that. There is always a shade of commercialism in stuff that is produced for sale, a compromise of artistic value for the taste of the person who has the cash. To be able to create a work of art to go with a quality blade, might just make his/her day!

Do you have some reputable artists to work with? I tried to get one of the "Indian Arts" places here to make a custom kilt pin for me, but they claimed that they didn't like doing that kind of pre-order custom work, as if the artists they work with know something has already been sold, apparently they'll jack up the price.

I do frequently carry a folder instead of a sgian dubh in my sock, usually one with a pocket clip, tucked in between the aprons of the kilt at the top, with the clip on the outside of the outer apron, but under the belt.

I tend to do the same thing, save that I clip it to the inner apron, with the clip between the two aprons.

I often do the same. I have also carried a folder, with the pocket clip removed, if there is one, as a sgian dubh, in the hose top.

I usually have my Benchmade or CRKT clipped on the kilt, on the inside apron. I have well-rounded the clip to prevent chaffing of the kilt.

I have not carried a "proper" sgian for a long time. I refused to carry a piece of useless "jewlery" when I have carried a good knife most of my life and use it every day. What's the point? I found a Cold Steel "mini Culloden" that is a marginal knife, better than the crap sold as sgians at Games. But because of my penury, I can't afford the $$$'s for a good custom sgian. *sigh*

Now, from what I hear, sgians are coming out of the UK unsharpened, according to law. Ugh....

I have noticed that most people in the U.S. wear their sgians way to far out of the hose, almost with the sheath showing...Dangerous. I've picked up a few sgians (and returned them to the owner) at games and other kilted gatherings when they have fallen out. I leave only a inch or so, maybe slightly more, out of the hose top.

Riverkilt if I understand correctly this is a lock blade folding knife. Couldn't you have a sheath made to hold it with the blade locked open? You could have the sheath made with a with an extra leather tab at the bottom of the sheath to make it more secure in the top of your hose?

I use a mini-culloden as my day to day blade. It's actually quite a good little user.
