Sgian Dubh or just a good ol' knife?
Having read this
As far as I'm aware, omst Sgian Dubh's are made more for ornament than for practical use. Also, with knives being the useful things they are and as popular as knives and/or 'Leatherman' type tools I was wondering whether anyone out there just carries a regular knife or utility blade around instead of a more ornamental Sgian Dubh?
Could this be a nice cross between the traditional and the modern?
Knife worn on the leg, on the waist?

Here is a practical solution to your dilemna.
Made by my good friend and brother BJ Snow.
These are not cheap. They are handmade damascus steel and priced accordingly.

I would love to carry a practical sgian dhu, but they're considered concealed weapons in Michigan (Assistant county DA told me that) My folder that I carry has a blade just as long, but is perfectly legal. The knige laws here are rather screwed up.
Of course, at some point I'm getting my concealed weapons permit so I can transport my blackpowder pistols from one place to another.

Amen to knife laws being screwy!
Do you mean that in Michigan you have to have a CCW permit to have a blackpowder gun in your possession?
According to Federal definition, cap-and-ball pistols and revolvers are not FIREARS. There are not even Federal laws prohibiting minors or felons from buying or possessing them.
I think you need to get in contact with the state Attorney General's office and ask for some legal definitions, and legal citations.

I own a couple traditionals for dress occasions, but I really prefer my fold-out knife. When it's closed, it looks like a Celtic Cross. The blade flips out and locks open. It's not going anywhere when it's in my kilt hose.
It's definately an original option to the ornamental ones.

Galant,
I have seen both Sgian Dubh's and knives used. My personal preference is the Sgian Dubh, because when people ask what it is I simply say it is a Sgin Dubh and they nod politely as if understanding what I said. I have seen someone using a letter opener (very fancy) as a substitue, and it did look passable, it did fool a lot of people. Those pictures that Doc showed are tremendous, had me drooling, and I am sure that they are worth the price (again you get what you pay for).

No, you don't need a permit to own, and technically you shouldn't need one to transport. My firearms safety instructor urged us to get a permit if we should ever have one, and officers here at least do not like people transproting them without a permit. Sorry I didn't specify.
