Ron, and anyone who even daydreams about going: get your passport now.
Don't wait until spring; the process can take several weeks & may be longer than when I last did it (2000). You'll need to line up certified birth certificate or other documentation, which can also take time.
Alas, I don't think Edinburgh is on our agenda. Our choir has a date in Canterbury just prior, however.

and the delays (logically) tend to increase significantly in the heavy-travel seasons of Spring and Summer.
I'm not backing down on my opposition to travel in general, I'm just calling attention to the advantages of doing things in the least expensive and inconvenient ways.

I'm sorely tempted, seeing as the Masters World Championships coincide, and I can go.
SORELY tempted. Of course, Mrs. Alan H would also have to acquiesce to this plan.

My understanding is there will also be a Veterans day event on the Saturday tying in with a separate event called pipers trail

I know little of all this and it has never been mentioned up here in the Highlands. With these tricky financial times it may be difficult for some, lets hope that things don't get too much worse, nevertheless if you get a chance to come to Scotland do try,the $/£ is great for you visitors at the moment.I would be delighted to meet up with any of you if, or when you are in this part of the world.

I'm going to be in town for the Gathering weekend and for about a week and a half before that will be checking out the highlands and then spending a few days in Dumfries at Ferintosh. I believe they are having highland games in Inverness the weekend before the Gathering so I may try to attend those as well.

My wife and I are planning a 2-3 week trip to Ireland during that summer. May take a side trip over to Scotland , maybe not. We want to roam around the countryside without a tour group and enjoy the people, places, and things on our pace. Maybe work in some flyfishing along the way. Where can I go for more info on "The Gathering" so I/we can make an informed decision whether to go or not?
