I agree with you, and the coil spring system on yours would not only easier to make but also less likely to malfunction

Now that's what a sporran locking mechanism should look like.

My brass-cantled sporran originally had a bag on it very very similar in style to this one, though in a darker brown leather. The leather itself was rather thin, and nothing to write home about. I had the bag replaced with a Ferguson-Britt model, and one of the differences I really like is that now, instead of three tassells on the front, I have one tassell in the center-front and one each on the sides, which is a more traditional arrangement.

    Nice sporran, Scott!

Here is a very nice sporan cantle from the National Museum of Scotland with three pistols. Something to think about before you try to open it!

If you ever read Rob Roy by Walter Scott, you may recall that Rob's sporran had a booby trap like that that would cause great harm to someone who shouldn't be messing around in another fellow's sporran.

And Mac of Rath--that's a really nice sporran. I would love to own one some day. I don't blame you for wearing it for regullar wear.

I also liked the Picturetrail photos. Now I have something else to think about!
