Ah my friend, very rarely do you find that the price and the quality are at odds - and truly is it said that you get what you pay for.
The suede effect is easily reduced by application water and wax polish, by the way, if that will improve things.
The third strap requires that there is what is termed 'ease' in the circumference of the kilt so that there is enough room for the changes in the body as it sits, leans, slouches or accommodates large dinners.
It might be that, with that ease, the kilt is actually loose when the wearer is standing in front of the mirror early in the day, so the strap is tightened up to fit the slim standing figure, and the apron then takes the strain later.

That's why the second strap on the apron side (if a kilt has one) should be buckled loosely. And, as many have said, the second strap doesn't do anything, and the kilt hangs better without it (unless you're a dancer and need the second strap to control the flapping of the apron during dancing).

That makes sense, Barb.
I'm at a point in altering my SWK where I am considering adding some kind of interfacing to the aprons. I might remove that strap and buckle in the process.
My only other thought is to set that strap up so that it can be interchangeable (black/brown) and attached with an elastic loop to minimalize any pull on the apron. Maybe even a false strap that is not attached to the apron, but the under apron instead, would work.
(It's a contemporary kilt after all.) Still thinking about how that might be done, though.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Yes, Yes
I had ordered the Highland Express Straps and buckles as well and they are excellent. They will be perfect. Thanks for the suggestion.
