from Chicago. For some of us the kilt is about heritage. But mostly it's about freedom

of course you can wear a kilt, you don't need permission to do so, no one owns it.Some of us here wear a kilt a few times a week, some virtually daily, and some only for special occasions, it's your choice. There is a wealth of information here, but a word of warning, make sure you have a large supply of salt, as there is also a great breadth of opinion as well. The most important thing is to be happy wearing the kilt, whether as a costume,in hommage or rembrance, or simply as something really comfortable!

I think Samuel L. Jackson is best fit to answer your question:

Go ahead, wear it!

First, welcome!
Second, IMHO there's no such thing as a "silly" question.
Third, by all means wear a kilt! Kilts are an "equal opportunity" garment: they do not discriminate because of race, color, religion, sex, or natural origin.

A black man in a kilt can look pretty sharp. Many AAs may even be associated with a tartan, because many African Americans have Scottish or Scots-Irish last names. Even if you don't have a kinship bond, there are plenty of appropriate tartans than can be worn by anyone. I encourage you to wear the kilt sir.

from Scotland. And no, you don't have to be Scottish or have a Scottish name to wear a kilt. You just have to want to, that's all.

Silly Question
We have many immigrants from the Caribbean with Scottish names. Welcome to the kilt. Also plenty of Scottish Country Dancers of many backgrounds.
