Contemporary Smith's and knife makers do some very high end artfull creations using layered steel. SOme years ago I was heavilly invested in 18th Century American colonial reenactment where a Damascas blade was Verbotten! During that period in the COlonies making layered steel was a lost art.

I recently discovered that during the Crusades thousands of Damascas swords were brought back to England. It's would seem very likly to me that not a few of these blades became dirks and sghin dubs.

I'm kind of indifferent when it comes to Sgian Dubh's. After working with all kinds of cutlery every day for fourteen years and being very picky about what I use, I only have two Sgian Dubh's, one is a plain very functional blade the other is a fancier one for show, dull blade and pretty, I'm just too damn picky about what blades I have on me.

Sounds like Rex has caught the sgian dubh bug.

You'll be longing for a doublet and jabot next, Rex. Good hunting.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I was picky also. Just could not find anything that I liked. Especially since only a little bit shows out of your sock! I finally ordered a Rab Gordon one. I looked over his web site quite a while before ordering one. I got to pick the wood, style, etc. Here is a photo of one of them.

Since we were going to Scotland any way, and going up north we went by there and picked it up. On impulse I bought another one he had sitting there ready to go on his site for sale.

I really like them, don't always wear them but I have them just in case.
    Cheers, Leslie

Rex, I admire your taste, have you looked at Lyttle?http://www.lyttleknives.com/gsgducem.htm
    or
    http://www.lyttleknives.com/gsgoutsh.htm
Lots of nice stuff out there, I never pulled the trigger on one of these, actually commissioned a sgian that was never produced, still may go after something eventually. I did find a very elegant silver sgian made in '29 that satisfies me.
