Matt's articles are great primers, but they are guidelines, you should of course modify them to fit your needs and tastes.

I find that I tend to follow Matt's "how to get dressed" article pretty close, except that I put my hose and shoes on first.

I do as mostly everyone else has said. Top bottom middle. My girlfriend has gotten so used to me wearing kilts that the funny thing is every time I am dressing around her usually when I get to the point where I am wearing my shirt and my shoes but no kilt she goes "Wait you put on your shoes already? Oh wait kilt!" She does it every time! It is very funny. I am sure it is kinda a funny look wearing just a t shirt and sandals. lol. I wonder I Went out like that I would still be pass the no shirt no shoes no service rule. They never say anything about pants or a kilt.

I think this does show that there are many ways of doing things "properly" and that by posting one way as being "the way" only leads to lots of discussion(not in itself ,wrong of course) but in the end it might not be as helpful as initially intended ( sorry Jamie).
I either start with shirt or hose, but my shoes always go on before the kilt, it's so much easier to tie laces without all the extra fabric in the way

To each his own - like Rex, I don my hose, garters, sgian dhu, and shoes before the kilt.

Also, for suits, I'm very used to measuring my long tie in relation to the length of my arm so that I always get the front length perfect. But for the kilt, as Matt says, the tie front should be much shorter. Since each arm is different, I'll avoid specifics on what one should use to determine where to tie the knot. For me, the narrow back end tends to be longer than the front, regardless, I suppose because of my choice of knot; so, I tuck it into the shirt between a couple of the button holes to keep it from sticking out from under the front part of the tie and/or the waistcoat.

Shirt, hose, garters, kilt, belt, sporran, jacket. I'm pretty sure that's how I do it, but then I'm half awake most mornings so its hard to be sure. There was that one day when I ended up at work with a brown belt and sporran and black shoes...

Ditto on the "top, bottom, middle" order of dressing.

thats the order they used on Mickmouse Clubhouse when they were showing how to burp a baby, which my eldest used on his brother when he was just born to burp him. He still sometimes signs "Top, top, Bottom, bottom, middle, middle, middle"

    Just saying..

You could go to the ScotWeb Kilt Store, they provide a great video that shows the proper manner of getting dressed in a formal kilt attire. I have watched it several times and they include three ways of tieing your gillies.
