I recall that the Saturn(cars) bicycle team also used Black Stewart in some capacity.

I believe MacMillan of Rathdown is right about the Black Stewart, it is a fashion tartan, anyone can wear it.

Royal Stewart could only be worn with the permission of the monach. The queen gave the privelage to some military pipe bands. Then so many people started using it that the monach just allowed it and said nothing, but I don't think it has ever officially been made a universal tartan. Unlike my favourite tartan the Hunting Stewart.

The Black Stewart is a definitely a fashion tartan. If you search some more, you find Grey Stewart, Green Stewart, etc. If I remember correctly, George V said that all in his family could wear the Royal Stewart tartan. This was interpreted to mean all his subjects within the British Empire.

Grampian Police Pipe Band now has their own tartan, no longer wearing Black Stewart.
