I was 16 when I started wearing a kilt for formal occasions. Prior to that, I really didn't have too many formal social functions to worry about, really.

My Grandmother MacMillan got me my first kilt when I was 12 or 13. But prior to that I wore a wide assortment of hand-me-downs and hand-me-overs, but I considered none of them as truly mine.

Below the age of 12 or so most boys are growing so fast that we seldome got the chance to wear a kilt that much before we were forced to pass it along. I do remember one summer (I was maybe 7 or 8) where I had on nothing much else than an old, well worn kilt the entire summer. - For a young boy roaming around on his own and with friends in the fields and woods, there was (and is) nothing better.

I wore it for family occasions from about the age of four onwards. In fact, we all did, including my cousins. It helped to have a Scottish-born grandmother who was a kilt maker! The newer generations of my family here in Canada don't seem very interested in it for the most part. Maybe that will change as they get older.
