It was more of a taster event, they also threw a stone. The organizer had three cabers, ranging from three to six feet, and three stones, probably from four ounces up to perhaps a pound(I didn't heft them). I did a bit of research last night and found that in the UK there are youth athletic events, but there don't seem to be such things in the US. As I said, he had a great time, but if he can't do the real thing until he's 18(that's eight years plus a little from now) I think he'll lose interest. As you can see, he is a large young man for his age; I think he could do well if encouraged.
On the subject of the "style" of the event; I told Alan that they were measuring the caber tosses. I think it was a way of keeping the kids interested as most all of them flipped every throw. The organizer did point out to the kids when they made a "good toss," ie, it landed at or near 12 o'clock.

You know, i bet we could organize a kids event.
I'm also thinking that such a thing might be really cool for Tartan Day at Ardenwood next year.

I think this is one of the best ideas I have heard of in a very long time. Every tradition has to start somewhere. If you start, today, now, requesting and agitating and lobbying and nagging all the organisers of your local highland games, then there might be something included for next year. That would give Scooby and the other kids all winter to practice before the event.
