Thank you guys. I have been convinced, I guess. Yesterday I wore my black UK with black kilt hose and wind breaker and it was all right and looks quite acceptable, I think and by all means perfect for the weather.
As you can imagine from the picture it was quite a windy day and only 5 degrees C.

My preference for the Utilikilt is to wear it with scrunched down hose and boots, but I do sometimes wear it with knee high hose in winter.

What's cool about Utilikilts is the wide range of "looks" different people go with.

At a recent large Highland Games at which there were a very large number of Ukilt wearers I noticed this variety.

Some people were wearing the complete traditional Highland Dress but with a Ukilt substituted for a tradkilt. For example one guy had on Lovat Green hose, ghillies, a trad leather Day sporran, a trad tweed Day kilt jacket, and Lovat Green Balmoral bonnet... in short the complete trad Day Dress outfit but with a Ukilt. It looked good to me.

Then there was the opposite extreme one could say, people wearing their complete ordinary daily dress but with a Ukilt substituted for their pants: sneakers/trainers, low socks, T-shirt, and baseball cap with their Ukilt.

One oddity was a person wearing a full head-to-toe Renaissance costume but with a Ukilt (funny, I didn't know that Ukilts existed in Elizabethan times).

And there were many who wore Ukilts as part of an entire integrated "look" with Dr Martens etc.

The wife makes fashion calls in our house. My wife's opinion on how kilts are worn are as such (in general):

    Fancy - the whole kit
Dress - hasn't come up yet
Business casual - polo with nice shoes like what Sport kilt calls cali brogues
Casual - T and combat boots

She considers the any none plaid kilt but the khaki to be casual. The khaki can be a business if worn with a nice shirt. Kind of like khaki jean over blue jeans.
