I quite often wear a matched tie with kilt, black hose and shirt with dark grey argylle jacket. The little flash of colour in the above belt expanse of dark looks rather dashing IMHO.

I also wear a tartan tie with a suit but not with a kilt.

I wasn't to keen on wearing tartan ties until I saw them widely worn in Scotland by kilted gentlemen, including clans chiefs.
Our own Jamie (Panache) looks dashing with his tartan ties.
I once told Ern (Mael Coluim) that I would well imagine myself wearing a tartan tie with a Dark Isle type (all black tartan) outfit : Black kilt, black shirt, black waistcoat, black jacket, black accessories AND a gorgeous tartan tie... perhaps with solid colour flashes to match, or just red.
Best,
Robert

I will sometimes wear a tartan bow tie with my kilt or with a "dinner suit" (tuxedo). My ever versatile argyle jacket looks more like a navy blazer when I wear a blue shirt and more like a tux when I wear a white pleated one. I like a wool tartan tie with a tweed jacket or suit and I remember wearing a tartan tie with a tartan shirt in my wild youth (Dress Gordon or BW tie on a Royal Stewart shirt).
But I may have been a bad person in my youth.
Right now I am holding in my hand ( a lie, I just put it down) a tartan full dress shirt, with pleats and french cuffs, marketed by Mr. Ralph Lauren, in a cotton tartan I can't identify- it's predominantly black and white with fine red and yellow lines crossing on the black. I haven't yet worn it, but if and when I do, I may well wear a tartan tie.

A tartan neck tie which matches a kilt or a tartan waistcoat looks fine with me.
It is not something I wear often, I only own two tartan neck ties, Cunningham and Royal Air Force.

I like them too, but I don't think I'll use them with the Kilt, if it isn't a solid color Kilt though. I am very fond of ties in general, I collect them. I have 2 tartan tieS Leslie Red and Modern Murry and Atholl.

I have several long ties in various MacIntyre tartans. I wear them with suits, but not with my kilts. I did break that rule when I was in Scotland last year because I had forgotten to pack another sort of tie (except for my black bow tie), so I donned a tartan one I had purchased while there.

One of the great things about tartan ties is that it's a way for s to get a relatively cheap sample of their tartan, and it's a functional sample.
I'm sure you've seen teenage boys wearing ties with t shirts. I've known some from the games wearing their tartan tie like that.
