Echoing what Phil has pointed out, the most successful conversion I have seen used the off cut of the jacket to make patch pockets which placed the top of the pocket up where it should be, thus preserving the proportions of the jacket.
Now that is a nice idea! Just hide the welts... All my schemes had been about cutting above them, or finagling them into flap pockets somehow.
