Have you tried here Paul? - http://www.kshosiery.co.uk/ - I found them excellent. Cost £95 I think.

Sorry Paul, for what my opinion is worth I tend to agree with the majority view that those hose are just perfect, to me the kilt has a weathered look to it, and the brightness of the hose just make it pop.
However, you pays your money you makes your choice, I can understand and appreciate your disappointment, but maybe, just maybe your being too hard on yourself.

I would be bummed, too, Paul if I was in your shoes (or in your hose, I should say).
I've been there, paid 200US for hand knit hose, waited months, and when they came the match was not great. (That was 20 years ago, full hose to match my MacDonald kilt in the House of Edgar Muted range. The hose knitter just didn't have the right colours to match the HOE muted tones. I ended up selling the kilt and hose a couple years later to somebody who thought they were all just grand.)
I suppose it's inevitable, what with the thousands of tartans and all the weathered and muted colours etc etc.
If you can't return those hose, I suppose down the line somewhere you might come across a tartan that matches them! Putting the cart before the horse, I know, but there might be tartans that are a good match for those hose.
I bought my new full hose from a local California shop. The match is quite good, but not perfect: the red is a tad more burgundy in the hose than in the kilt. I wonder where my shop had them made... in Scotland somewhere I guess. (Drummond of Perth muted.)

Some on this forum seem uninterested in matching the kilt to anything, but I tend to worry about such things. I've even been known (to my embarrassment) to match my earring to my socks and underwear (when wearing trousers). And I'm in that minority who likes a monochrome look, at least some of the time. However, I honestly like the look of the blue with that kilt - it gives the grey a blue cast and warms everything up. The problem as I see it is that the hose might possibly restrict your choice of colour in a shirt or whatever, where sticking to grey would mean you could wear whatever other colours you please, since grey (even with that yellow stripe) goes with pretty much anything.

Aren't white shirts pretty much de rigueur with formal dress, for surely that is how the hose in question would be worn?

I have mixed emotions in regard your dillemma Paul. From first glance I think the hose look great with the kilt tartan, but on closer inspection agree that there is a blue undertone to the medium grey in the hose that is not there in the tartan. Probably most people would not notice it and thereforewould be satisfied, but you did notice it and it will forever bug you if you decide to keep them. It seems your hose-maker agreed with you that it was an imperfect match and agreed to take them back, so it is purely up to you. However, getting a perfect match may not be possible, may not be possible at that price point, and getting a perfect match may cost you a pretty schilling to do so in addition to the undesireable delay you seem to want to avoid, reason withstanding.
Tough decision, but yours and yours alone to make my friend. I have made similar and been able to get over my constant awareness of the known imperfection, but I have also been bugged to death by the same thing at times. I do not envy you your choices. But I do wish you good luck with your project.
Lovely tartan by the way---did we ever declare what it was to the rabble, or did I simply miss it?

Regardless of the outcome, I cannot get over the fact the mfr/knitter thought it was okay to make the substitute without first checking w/ you, or advising you of the change.

Jeff, I missed your post when going through the thread earlier.
You summed up the situation very well. I've given it a few days and realised it wouldnt bug me forever, but still is at the moment. I've yet to make a final decision, still!
The kilt was made by Slanj and is the SNP tartan. I'm hoping to wear it to a celidh on saturday so there will be plenty of pictures of swinging pleats, and Imay have made a decision about the hose by then too.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

At first glance, I thought the hose looked pretty good with the tartan. But after seeing the photoshop where Paul matched the color to the tartan, I think he'd be right in sending them back and finding someone who can get a better color match.

That's the Scottish National Party tartan. I think it's one of the best looking modern tartans I've ever seen. It's simple yet elegant.
