I think you are very smart for ordering the swatches before having the kilt made. I based my tartan on selection on the image on my monitor, and after having the kilt made, and seeing it in person for the first time, realized that it was very differnet in person! Not that I am complaining...I actually like the real thing as much if not more that the image on the monitor!

Morrison Hunting Weathered looks like it should be a very attractive sett indeed to me. I should imagine you are pleased. Just for interest, what would you say the IRL differences are? I'll guess it's darker than the jpg. Is there anything else?

The biggest difference was that what I expected to be an olive or kakhi green turned out to be a medium to light shade of grey.

The brown is about the same.

What I thought was a dark grey is closer to black.

And the thin red stripe is very subtle. In fact, I almost had it pleated to the red stripe, but decided not to because I wasn't sure if the red stripe was distinct enough. I'm glad I made that choice, but I still wonder what it would have looked like the other way.

If I ever have another kilt made, it will bein one of the Morrison Red tartans, and will be pleated to the stripe. I will absolutely order swatches before selecting which red is my favorite!

    Oh sweet mercy.

They have the nerve to change the mailboxes in my building this week just when I'm expecting more swatches.

    The anticipation is killing me.

    Hi all,
I have been lurking about for a few weeks gleaning info about my first kilt purchases, and finally joined today. Thanks for all of the "free" help thus far! Hopefully I will be able to add some benefit to another newbie in the future.

xman, I claim Macmillan as my clan (mother's maiden name) and am considering the Lochaber (WOB) as one of my first choices as it is believed to be one of our ancestral homes. Can you post a photo of that swatch? I have an inquiry in to the Scottish Tartan Museum about a swatch but patience is not one of my vertues!

Thanks again to all for your help thus far, I hope to repay the favor.

Thanks Terry, that was very thoughtful!

I have seen those, and at last count, approx. 1,000,638 others :-) I think in my newness I am not quite "bold" enough to go with the Macmillan Old or ancient yet. I am just not confident enough yet for the bright yellows in both. But, I think I could handle The Hunting Modern, and the Old Weathered.

Rocky at USAK made me a very nice "Macmillan Black" (not officially clan recognized) PV casual a couple of weeks ago that I wore for the first time to the Sacramento Games last weekend. I made that purchase based on all of you guy's well deserved positive feedback on his products and service. I will try to get a photo up here and to Rocky soon.

So... I am currently considering the Macmillan Old Weathered, Hunting Modern, and the Lochaber (WOB). In the mean time I have started working on the 12 steps for "Kilt Buyers Anonymous" OMG!! At this rate I swear I'm going to be the best dressed guy on poverty row!

Thanks again for all your help. We'll be talking more I'm sure!

    'Tis true and hey

that Macmillan Old Weathered is probably the closest sett to Mel Gibson's Braveheart without actually being that one that I have seen. Very 'historical' look.

I'd get swatches of both of those and the Modern before I decided if I were you.

You might also want to consider MacMillan Hunting Weathered, a bit difficult to come by, but worth the search.
