The question is: what does one do with a collection of unworn tartan flashes?
Maybe save them for making replacement kilt belt loops if your originals ever get damaged? Assuming your kilt has belt loops, that is.
Other than that, I've been asking the same question to myself.

I went to the hand tied garter ties several years ago. Matt has a great selection at STM, but all you really need are the basic colors: red, dark blue, dark green and throw in lovat green for good measure. I have large calves and enjoy the comfort of the garter ties.
I now use the old elastic flashes for cat toys( except the ones for my IOS and am trying to work those flashes into a garter tie).

Very comfy for sure. I started out with "just one" to try them out. Loved it so bought a few "basic colors." Now own a rainbow of TEN colors....
Is it a quality product, an olde Boy Scout being prepared, or yet another addiction?

Once I got a pair of garter ties from Matt, I haven't worn elastic flashes AND I bought a second pair from Matt. Now have a 3rd pair on my wish list. They eliminate the elastic pressure and they look great.

pattern
I'd like to know if anyone has a pattern for a not so normal pair. Can you make heather or argyle garters? Knit?

I've seen heathered garters, bi-coloured knit (whole garter), and a plain garter with a bi-coloured fringe.

I'm having a pair woven to match the MacDonald of Glencoe tartan. They are supposed to replicate one of the stripes. I haven't received them yet so can't comment on how they look, but the young woman who is weaving them does excellent work. I've know her since she started weaving and her current products (mostly for reenactors) are first class.
She does some garters that have zig-zag patterns in them, not unlike a tartan, so I suspect a good weaver could make something similar to an argyle style.

I completely agree with you, Standard. I no longer wear flashes with elastic.

One of my grandfathers, who was medical, used to rave against elastic garters on medical grounds. In my own case, it first came up when I was seven and joined the Wolf Cubs- I refer to the scouting organization and not anything seen on True Blood, etc.
