In relation to problems with customs. I have been buying most of my kilts and accoutrements from overseas for a number of years. I have only had trouble once because the vendor didn't fill the paperwork out correctly (see my thread re SHO) I have had sporrans, kilts, jackets, sgian dubh's, hose, hats, all imported with no fees, duties or problems and has never taken more than ten working days, sometimes half that.
If all the paperwork is in order and you are not bringing in what could be classed as a commercial shipment you will not have problems.
As for the comments re it being a hub for smugglers, no more or less than most international centres.
Just a side note, you can't smuggle illegal drugs (Prohibited imports) as to smuggle something there must be a duty attached to it. There is no duty on prohibited imports
