No. At one point he gets all cleaned up and comes down the stairs playing his pipes, but he is wearing a Scottish military dress uniform with trews. Can't remember what his regiment was or what tartan the trews were made out of.

Here's a link to a cowboy action shooter named "two ponies" scroll down near the bottom and you'll see two images of him in a kilt outfit.

I don't care for the look, and don't know if it is period accurate, but it does open the door for others to do similar.

Thanks to all for the input.

Unless you shoot at the higher levels of CAS, they seem pretty open-minded about such things. There was a group of nine guys who dressed as a period baseball team a few years ago at the national finals. It caused a lot of snark at the time between the folks who have fun and the bunch who take this goofy business WAY too seriously.

Generally speaking, though, I reckon it'd be acceptable.

I acknowledge that it isn't period correct - pardon the heresy, but there are more practical items to wear than a kilt for long hours of slogging through the bush, gutting an elk, or shooting gophers. It would be cool, though, and look damned sharp, and so I plan to do it.

Thanks, AZWildcat, for the pix of Two-Ponies in his thriftstore skirt. I'd seen that before. It was a long time ago, and thanks to counseling and a stringent program of medication, I had largely recovered. Glad he had some fun.

I've been in CAS for over 10 years (I forget when I actually started).

The Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) doesn't really care if you dress "authentically" or "Hollywood" or somewhere in between. The National Congress of Old West Shootists (NCOWS) requires authenticity in dress and firearms. The Grand Army of the Frontier (GAF) encourages military uniforms of the Victorian era.

I've seen a few kilted shooters, but many don't do it because of some of the physical activity required on some stages (such as climbing into and out of wagon, or laying on the ground. One shooter routinely wears a uniform of the 42nd Highlanders (he has several outfits) but is more likely to wear trews while shooting and reserve the kilt for the dinner. Another shooter I remember wore an outfit similar to your description - half Highlander, half native. My thoughts are that the military look goes better as it seems few civilians wore a kilt in the US and then only for special occasions.

I would suggest you forego the kilt for shooting and put together a nice look for the dinner/banquet at the end of the (larger) shoots. If you want to show your Highland heritage while shooting make up a vest. I've got one in Black Watch that I wear occasionally (usually its too hot to wear wool).

Sir William Drummond Stewart went to some of the fur trade rendezvous in the late 1830s and early 1840s. He was known to put on his kilt for "formal" occasions, but otherwise he didn't wear it routinely.

I may need some recommendations on the medication part. It's going to take something pretty strong to get those images out of my head.
