My first hand sewn kilt was 11 ounce wool from Lochcarron. Only weight the tartan - Macdonald Lord of the Isles Hunting - came in. My kiltmaker carefully explained about the light weight, that it was a dancer's tartan weight. But I went ahead with it. Love it - one of my favorite kilts. Thought it'd be nice to have a lighter weight for Arizona, but its also just fine when I visit Colorado's San Juan Mountains in the winter.
Lochcarron's 11 ounce wool is NOTHING like PV...whole different look and feel. Apples and oranges.
I would have chosen a heavier wool for this tartan if it had been available - but I've not once regretted purchasing the kilt in 11 ounce wool.
