The Scotland Kilt Company casual wool kilt review

The Scotland Kilt Company has 5 yard, machine sewn, 16 oz worsted wool, Douglas tartan kilts on sale at 42% off. Shipping is free by regular mail and with all tax and duty I got one for approximately $170 CAD. My main standard of comparison in this review is a vintage Grant tank that I inherited from a friend.

The cloth is definitely heavy but somewhat rough as you might expect for the price. I'm a big fan of the Douglas Modern, I have family ties to it, and was pleased to find a wool kilt in that tartan for a rock-bottom price.


The standard length is advertised as 24" but mine was more like 25" and my lovely lady did a blind hem stitch for me to make it 22.5". The image also shows the selvedge line, which was a bit rough.


It is pleated to the sett and has 27 pleats of varying depths. This gives the illusion of there being more material than there actually is. The first pleat is rather shallow and there is a reversed final pleat. The cotton liner is rather short, being only about 6".



There are three sturdy buckles and straps, as well as two wide belt loops. The waist is 34" and can be tightened up to a 33", which was still a bit large for me. I had my ladyfriend move the inside strap back one inch and it fits much better now on my 32" waist. The front apron is tapered and fringed.

Regular mail (free) shipping from Scotland took about 2 weeks and they answered some pre-purchase questions I had within a couple days. Apparently they are on-sale because the distributor is closing out this particular model and The Scotland Kilt Company bought all their remaining stock at a discount.

The kilt is one of those "designed in Scotland" types but does not indicate where it was made. That doesn't bother me but FYI to those with issues about such things. Come to think of it, my Gucci glasses say something similar "designed in Italy," though they also say "made in China."


All in all, I would say this is a good value for those looking for a wool kilt in this tartan, without a heavy price tag.

This looks like a well made machine stitched 5 yarder. The fabric looks fine and the varied pleat depths have allowed them to preserve the "pleat to the sett" on a tartan with a very large sett. The short liner is pretty much SOP for most 5 yarders so this looks like good value for money.

The kilt looks great and you obviously wear it with pride! Now about those hose...

From a fellow Douglas wearer (Ancient tank and modern PV 8 ydr) and Douglas sept clansman, you are looking good. I really like the large sett which is shown off by the dominant white line. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. From the looks of the selvedge you probably got either Batley, MM Jura or HoE Nevis material, as that looks like the rapier cut finish they all have.

It is, but isn't there a duty on imported wool garments?

Well, after browsing their web page I am going to have to say it----I will not and would not recommend shopping this company, despite the nice product CMcG describes above.

They are a Gold Bros outlet as can be seen by their offerings of "Heritage" brand tartans, but that is not the reason to boycott them. This, however, is:

They are selling kilts in a tartan called "Skye Isles" which looks distinctly like the copyrighted Isle of Skye tartan that the Gold Bros have previously been sued for copyright infringement. Although I bet there is a subtle difference in the thread count allowing them to get away with it this time on a technicality, it is still unethical and poor business practice in my book.

Nuff said.
