I get strangely claustrophobic looking at these. I'm not at my best in confined spaces. It's possibly the absence of scale but do you get any of that sense when you're actually there?

Well, I used to work in the mines as a boy, but was boozing then. When I sobered up Claustrophobia reared up at the strangest times - like not being able to sit on the inside at a booth in a restaurant. Only had one bout with it in the slot canyon a few trips ago when it was full of lots of people and in the narrowest spot and no one was moving. An unusual situation. No problems with it since but going often builds a familiarity that helps.

This trip my niece was worried about it but she steeled herself for it and plunged ahead. Wound up not having any problems with it.

Guess its up to each indivudual and where their mind is at the time for the situation. The slot canyon is about a quarter mile long.

Its so beautiful in there one doesn't focus on fear as much as the beauty.

Funny ol' thing. I'm fine usually but get twitchy if I can't identify a clear exit. I know where it comes from and it's all in my head so I can subdue it and control it more often than not. It's unusual for me to give away any feelings I might be having to people around me. On the other hand I'm equally jumpy sitting with my back to an open room, I know where that one comes from too but it's one situation I will usually try and avoid wherever possible. My family and friends automatically give up the seat against the wall now.

Sorry Ron, didn't mean to turn this into a session of Psychoanalysis

I am in awe at the beauty of the rock and find it difficult to comprehend the sheer power it must take to carve it out with gritty water. Amazing location indeed and I'd love to go there one day.

If you've ever seen even a small flash flood in the desert you'd understand how water carved it. The floods that come through can fill it to the top - close to a hundred feet in some areas. Every time a flash flood comes through it either raises or lowers the floor of the canyon by removing or depositing sand. Up to 5 feet added or washed away. One reason I go back is because it changes after a flood.

Last trip about three of the guides recognized me from the kilt and said hello. Can't help but wonder how many tourists snapped pics of the kilted guy in the slot canyon.
