Welcome Paul, from another upstate NY'er.
Your near by, but have you visited the NYS Military Museum in Saratoga Springs yet ?
http://dmna.state.ny.us/historic/mil-hist.htm
They have quite a bit of info on the 79th on thier website, but sometimes Museums only display part of what they have in thier archives. Explaining your connection to the 79th may get you a meeting with their Curator and access to whatever additional info may be in their archives that's not out for public view.
Paul.

That would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for offering. It is nice to see that it is still in such good condition and so nicely maintained. Thanks Rachel

Welcome!
What an honour, to be descended from a 79th NY soldier.
I too am descended from a Union soldier: my grandfather's grandfather, Leonidas Hamilton Cook, served in the 7th West Virginia Cavalry. He was shot through the temples and blinded, not in battle, but while home on leave, by a Confederate sympathiser.
There is an annual gathering of descendants of 7th West Virginia Cavalry soldiers. I wonder if there's a similar thing for the 79th New York?

from Chicago. My great-grandfather, whose mother was a Gordon, enlisted in the Virginia Militia on his 17th birthday in 1862.
