I own quite a number as well, primarily for the same reasons. I use them as a quick reference when I'm reading about a battle or campaign and want to acquire a visual idea of what the participants wore or carried.

If I want to read more about the topic, the bibliography provides a good starting place.

The Sword Forum has a number of Victorian Era photos on display now in their Military Sword thread. Most of them are of Scottish Officers in various uniforms. Might be worth a look to you.

    Sword Forum?

I don't really do good with pictures... I just kind of try to figure things out from the comments in the posts after the pictures. It's really slow.

Sorry, "Swordforum.com". This is a sword collectors sight with a number of different forum groups. If you look at the thread for "Antique and Military Swords", you will find a collection of old pictures among which are Sir Colin Campbell and other Scottish Officers.

    Re: "Queen Victoria's Highlanders" (Osprey)?

I guess I did find the book useful, and I realize there are better or more detailed books out there. There were some interesting details like the square button origin, something I've wondered about, and the discussions of bonnets and spats. A neat little book. Hopefully I've learned a little.
    Thanks, everybody.
