Heck, black is the new black you know.
I once got mistaken for the bartender while dressed in black. Let the fellow rant on until he ran out of steam, then pointed him in the direction of the bartender and told him to start over. Got me a free pint for my service.
I still have a desire for that all-black tartan. I'd wear that with just red flashes on black hose and a red toorie on a black glengarry. Maybe a red bow tie, who knows?
Black is a great evener. It makes us skinny little guys look filled out and makes the gentlemen of substance look slimmer.

I'll be the wrench in the works and say I'm not a big fan of all-black, especially at a ceilidh. If I were a guest at said party, I'd wonder why you were wearing all black, and I might be smart-aleck enough to ask why you were disguised as a rotten banana, if I knew you well enough. At a party, I'd rather see you wearing at least some white to break up the black.
Now, as usual around here, you have both sides of the question. What really matters is how many pictures you post for us to look over.

I doubt it, but luckily there is no six week wait for the ghillie brogues, so I'll be able to wear them to a couple of dance classes and around the house before the ceilidh.

The cool thing is that as time goes by you can add to your kilt hose. I've been wearing a kilt regularly for about 5 years and I think I must have about 50 pair of kilt hose. As I said black is fine and it will look great, have a good time at the ceilidh that is the most important thing.

If you're thinking of a solid dark-colored dress shirt and have time to grab something else in addition to (not instead of) black, you might think of dark blue or dark green, with flashes that would tone with the shirt. Not suggesting for a moment that your original idea isn't suitable, it certainly is!

Black goes with everything. With Red flashes it will look great.
One of the advantages of wearing a tartan Ive found, is the ability to play with the color palette.

Re: All black: a safe choice?
I too will provide an alternative opinion, as I am not a big fan of the black look. Does it work? sure I guess so, but I think that nearly any other color works better with that tartan when given a choice. Oddly enough, when I look at the photos of Ryan and Glen it looks ok to me...on them, it's just not something I would wear. I would prefer any light blue, green, or yellow shirt, with any color of hose other than black as long as they didn't match the color of the shirt. Claret hose with yellow garter ties would be a nice choice I think.
That will be two cents please.
Have a great time whatever colors you choose, I just wanted to give you some other options to consider.

I think black is a fine safe start, but I am really looking forward to seeing what can really be done with modern Macleod in the near future.
The possibilities are nearly endless, its a beauty.

Re: All black: a safe choice?
Black is right and looks great. I wear a black shirt with a blue tie and blue flashes and a saltire sporran very often. I think it looks great and is quite different to the hired kilt outfits of many others.
