Re: Sporran Strap Reality Check
I don't know, part of me thinks a red or white sporran strap with a horsehair sporran in full dress would look pretty darn good.
Not so sure on the green or blue though.
Have fun and throw far. In that order, too. - o1d_dude

Re: Sporran Strap Reality Check
I tend to side with the "less is more" people, however, I do have a grey strap that I custom ordered (which wasn't really the colour I wanted) that turns out to look really good with my Hudson's Bay tartan.
Generally, I think subtlety is best: I haven't seen any clear pictures (maybe some one can post a few?), but perhaps texture and detail would be a quality addition--woven leather straps or possibly designs in the leather?
Personally, I'm not impressed with a lot of glitter--the most effective ensembles seem to be those that look harmonious, yet when you look closer you see detail and intricacy that isn't obvious from a distance.
EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.

in general I am with the crowd on this one, being a brown or black man myself. I do have a couple fashion belts in faux crocodile or snakeskin pattern leather picked up from the women's dept that I pressed into service as sporran straps, and just this afternoon was in a store looking at some women's belts in woven and patterned leather as well as some leather mixed with colored fabric or a hemp style weave, and had some of the same thoughts as Ron. "Too much? Too dandy-ish?". Where is Panache when you need him (sorry,no ill will intended, just the Grant effect coming out of me).

That's a tough look to beat. Perhaps only the officer's buff leather tops it.
With thanks to McMurdo for the later pic.

Sorry to diverge a bit here, but I just couldn't let this go-
Kilting to church every week is an awesome treat, and I'll tell you why. If you do it EVERY week, it won't take any time at all for the folks to get used to it, so if you're worried about it being a distraction, you probably don't need to be.
Now here's the most important part, though- Every once in a blue moon, after they're all so used to the kilt that they don't even notice it anymore, wear a pair of p@nts, just to mess with them. Man it's fun, and the only time it'll distract anyone is after the proceedings are over. At that point, you'll get all sorts of amusing comments... probably more that you're used to from the kilt!
We now return to your regularly scheduled sporran straps...

Re: Sporran Strap Reality Check
This inner pair is as fancy as I get;
I know - hangers.. Me sporran is too heavy and would saw the belt loops off with a belt - or hang too low.
