Sporran Strap Reality Check
I've been going nutso ever since Creagdhubh posted about McRosties of Glasgow. Been lurking on their site. Never knew that red, green, and blue leather sporran straps were available.
Keep wondering what they'd look like.
If McRosties offers them SOMEONE must be buying and wearing them - but I don't recall ever seeing one.
So I visulize what a red sporran strap to a black sporran might look like worn with my Cameron Black and Red tartan kilt. Or a blue sporran strap with my Antarctic tartan. Or a green sporran strap with my Macdonald Lord of the Isles kilt.
I wanna buy one of each to have on hand - sorta like I've done with traditional garter ties.
Then a new question leaps to the fore - should the color of the sporran strap match the tartan or the garter tie?
Would it look stupid? Would it be too much? Or would it be an extra fashion touch that would look sharp?
Back to if McRosties offers them someone must be buying them and where can I see a pic of someone making this look work?

Re: Sporran Strap Reality Check
I tend to be on the "Less is More" side of things, but I'll weigh in here.
I think gents in general should confine themselves to black, brown tones, or Cordovan in leather. The exception would be white leathers for certain military/civilian parade/dress purposes.
Red, blue or other bright coloured leather belts would be just too 'dandy' for me. A bit too much like Louis XIV and his red painted heels.

I'm too fashion challenged to even think of something like that. Anything besides black troubles me. I wear my brown leather Nightstalker sporran with a black strap and I worry that I'm breaking some sort of after Labor Day rule. I only wear my cordovan shoes if my shirt will be untucked as I don't have a cordovan belt.

I have to side with you here, Scott. Black and brown are what I'm comfortable wearing myself, and what tends to look good to me when worn by others.
That said, hey- Folks should wear what makes THEM happy. And I very often times see folks wearing something that I would never wear myself in a million years, but I still think it's looking good and working for them.
So on that note, I'd be interested to see this colored sporran strap idea in action, even if I'm a little unsure as to how good it might look to my own eye.

The question for me includes BOTH - what makes me happy AND what image I'm projecting. For me personally: Black or brown

Hamish has an all-blue leather look that is quite beautiful. I like Ron's idea of pulling out one of the tartan colors in the sporran strap. But then, I'm a girl

"Dandy" that's the word I couldn't think of. Thanks.
Black and brown for me too - in fact, the brown was a stretch. But I can't figure why the red, blue, green sporran straps are offered then? Someone must buy them for something. I vaguely remember Ham's blue sporran.

Re: Sporran Strap Reality Check
Here's a thought, if you want to see what it might look like before splashing out on the actual strap. Find a fabric store and buy a length of grosgrain ribbon in the approximate color/width. Kilt up and wrap the ribbon around on top of your actual sporran strap (might need to clip it in place with something that won't snag the tartan). See if you like it!
The ribbon can be recycled in many ways, offer it here for postage when you're done.

Re: Sporran Strap Reality Check
I think if I wore my kilt often enough it would be a nice change of pace.
Like if I went to my office kilted five days a week, every week all year.
In that instance I could see a mustard yellow or bottle green Argyle jacket as the sort of thing I could wear often enought o justify the expense. Same with colored sporran straps. If I was kilted often enoguh I could see the bottle green jacket and maybe even the blue sporran strap with a red kilt on casual Fridays. Might be brilliant.
But really I try to not wear my kilt to kirkin every week, and that is the only ongoing opportunity I have, so I got to sign up with "less than once a week, average" and I can't justify the expense of colored sporran straps or bright colored jackets.

Re: Sporran Strap Reality Check
This topic makes me think of my idea for a "fancy" sporran strap I posted about in another topic the other day...
