I have never seen this and I have been wearing sporrans a long time. I currently have 5, (or is that 6?) and a great many have bitten the dust before, all made in Scotland.
I have worn coo leather, pigskin, sealskin, goathair, alleged ponyskin, and long horsehair sporrans over a period of over 30 years. However, I have not ever seen a lined sporran.
Neither have I. I never cease to learn from this website.

Me either.

I've never seen one "in the flesh" but have noted a few online, and in a surprisingly wide range of prices. I honestly don't know why they line them. If it's made of decent leather it will last quite a while...much longer than the liner anyhow. Seems pointless to me, and just something else to wear out, but if someone prefers it for some reason I won't argue the point.

I think that you nailed it with 'if it is made of decent leather' as to why some sporans are lined.
Now when I made a purse out of rat skin I had to make a purse from two layers of sturdy cotton and then attach the skin to that, otherwise the coins would have split the skin in no time. I have seen items in charity shops where the back of the leather is only held together by the plastic layer on the outside, so presumably there is an ongoing source of leather which is not tanned correctly but so cheap that no one really cares.
It might be that someone is using some slightly cheaper but good quality leather with flaws or stains on the inside and has patched it, or is trying to make it look better, of course, but just call me suspicious as that was not the first thing that came to mind.

This is a good question. Can anybody actually quote a manufacturer who lines his sporrans? Any pictures?

To answer my own question - my Nightstalker in brown leather is lined! But that might be to do with separating the different compartments - I don't know.

It's the first time I've heard of lined sporrans too! And I've owned dozens of sporrans over the last 35 years, all made in Scotland (except for a couple by L&M in Nova Scotia).
I've had MOD sporrans and badger sporrans and sealskin Evening sporrans and plain Day sporrans and Victorian sporrans and Edwardian sporrans... and they were all made of very high-quality leather and unlined.
My advice is "don't go cheap on your sporran". I would avoid Pakistani/Indian sporrans and stick to sporrans made by legitimate UK or North American makers. You'll never regret having a high quality sporran that will last several lifetimes of regular use.

I don't own one, but I've seen and handled lined (usually with red) sporrans offered by L&M, and avalible from various vendors;

I've only been into this kilt wearing thing for like 8 years. I guess I'm really into it, due to the fact that I'm aware of things like lined sporrans and 'hunting' sporrans, and other things that seem so unusual to some of our more seasoned members here.

Doesn't Artificer line his sporrans with a different color of leather? Does that qualify as a "liner" or are we talking of a fabric liner, such as what is found in purses?

It depends on the type of sporran, but yes I frequently do.
The fur bags are lined because I don't think the 'hand' of the inside of pelts is particularly nice. I use pigskin suede for this. If someone wears through pigskin they're clearly doing something wrong - like carrying broken glass in their sporran
Many of my "day" sporrans are lined in smooth pigskin or calf, depending on the type of bag.
The ex-MoD bags and some other soft bags are unlined, as I want them to be a soft and flexible as possible.
