I think you should warn Xmarkers to stay away from this guy. If you've given him opportunities to fix this and he hasn't, then I think you should share the name of his business.

That aside, what exactly was it that convinced you to do business with this particular person?

We've heard similar stories in the past and the common thread seems (to me) to be that the deceived were rooked in by "too low to be true" prices.

Was he highly recommended here on XMarks? Is he a partner or advertiser? Were there raving reviews of his work and customer service?

I just went to your wedding thread and saw that the retailer was Peter MacHummel with Canadian Casual Kilts.

When I searched for "Peter MacHummel" here at XMarks this thread popped up right away:

Well done, David. I'm glad this particular vendor has been brought to the fore once again. Businesses should never operate in this manner.

Sadly, some vendors take advantage of the trust on this board...I believe in sharing the facts, including the vendor's name, to warn others.

Not all are crooks...some are trapped by circumstance but remain too hopeful something will bail them out.

There have been many over optimistic kiltmakers come and go - its a tough business. Sadly, some customers get hurt on the going out of business side.

The best protection is to deal directly with the maker - which you did with the kilt. Middlemen are at the mercy of their sources...

But not standing up and making it right someway, somehow deserves fair warning for the rest of us. And, as mentioned, methinks this isn't the first time for this vendor.

The allure was that he offered products in my size. I've since learned that some of the advertisers here can do custom orders beyond their listed size range, but that was only after months of reading the forums. I wish that I had gone with USA Kilts, I wish that I had seen that other thread, and I wish that broccoli tasted more like bananas.

When very few people offer clothes in your size, you get hopeful when someone does. I can't stress enough to retailers to list everything they offer on their website - searching through forums or calling to check on things is not something that a first-time purchaser is going to do. I thought that I was ahead of the curve because I did do some forum crawling and found a few positive reviews.

I couldn't agree with you more. Us GOS have to spend literally hours trawling through websites to try and find a vendor that supplies non standard fit sizes.

    Got it. That makes sense.

Perhaps one positive thing that could come out of your experience is a sticky thread that lists suppliers who cater to GOSs...

Smashing idea David. I am a GOS and have had nothing but good things when dealing with Rocky at USAKilts. If there is a problem, he emails quickly. One time they were out of a shift in my size...Rocky CALLED me himself to tell me that they were waiting for one to come and when it did, he would ship it out right away.

Just today I received an email stating that my Spirit of Scotland kilt is on its way from USAKilts. They are the best I've dealt with so far and will continue to do business with in the future.

But I think a sticky post for us GOS and vendors would be a great idea.

I've read all the responses here, and the other thread (s) related to experiences with this guy. It looks to me like he has "chronic" problems, and I'll just leave it at that.

My suggestion? Move on, or sue him. I've dealt "companies" (people) who have an excuse for every "lack of performance" under the sun, and we all know where that goes, and how it originates.

Now that the members of this "community" know who he is, THEY can make the decision as to being, or NOT being a consumer or customer of his.

Personally I'm saying "Thanks for the heads up" . I'm not very (ever) concerned about being politically correct, and am for calling this deal just like I see it.

It just is what it is.
