Tigger, I have a '98 electraglide classic. I had a '91 springer that I absolutely loved and somebody talked me into selling to get the 'glide to ride to the '95 in Milwaukee. the glide works so well I couldn't get rid of it. As to the uthur thing, I no whut yu meen abuot speeling. I have to double check everything I write to make sure it's intelligible.

lol, Nice ride though. I'm thinking of trading or selling and buy a roadking, better for the highway and all.

I am presently reading a book about Scots and the modern world. Before tartans started to be registered, they wore what ever they liked.

I think that is the tradition to follow.

In reality I think they wore whatever was available from the local weaver. Granted, the specific Clan tartans are relatively recent, but it is kind of nice to have at least one in a tartan with a family connection.

Am I going to be a Kilted Faux Pas or Not?

I must point out that the notion of reserving predominantly red tartans for evening-wear and predominantly green for day-wear is so much tosh. For a start, there are many tartans which are not offered in a choice of green or red versions (off-hand I can think of MacQueen, Munro, Rob Roy, and Skinner, which, unless new variations have recently been invented, are available only in reds; and Irvine, Hyslop and Henderson in greens); and there many old and new tartans, for example, Napier, Ochterlonie, Royal Air Force, St. Andrews district, Hannay, MacKerral, which contain little or no green or red at all.

I just want to point out that when I said that generally the red tartan is considered more formal and the green tartan is considered more casual was in response to the question posed by Tigger which was: "What is the best color for formal outfits, Red or Hunting?"

The question was posed here: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/v...r=asc&start=15

I never intended to imply that I felt predominantly red tartans and only predominantly red tartans should be worn for formal wear, or that predominantly green tartans and only predominantly green tartans should be worn for casual wear. Also, my response was not dealing with all the tartans that aren't predominantly red or green, or tartans that don't have green or red variations because that wasn't the question at hand.

The question was which is best for formal wear. (Implying that the conversation is about tartans that have red and hunting variations) I said that generally speaking the red is considered more formal, but in modern times the darker color tartans might be nice if you want to minimize how much you stand out from the pants wearing crowd.

I do not want to labour this, but I would like to know by whom "the red is considered more formal", please.

Personal opinion, I find the red tartans to be more of a formal tartan than a lot of the green based tartans. I often wear my Royal Stewart kilt casually, but I like the look of it for more formal occasions. It is a matter of personal choice.

    "dress" tartans...

Strictly speaking, gents should stay away from the so-called "dress" tartans with white in them, since these are really reserved for women -- the "arsaid" tartans. Now, I'm not telling anyone with a "dress" kilt to scrap theirs, wear what you want, but this is the custom.

    Cheers,

    T.
