Hrmm, I guess I'm in the same boat as you two....I'm 6'3" with a size 13 foot (though I wear a twelve in most boots).
And on the original topic of the thread, I usually wear my steel toed Doc Martens with any of my kilts.

I don't wear tartans often. Mostly I wear non-traditional casual kilts. As such I'm pretty free in the footwear that I choose. I wear everything from boots to loafers, and sneakers(trainers) to sandals. With my tartans I wear black heavy loafers similar to these. I wear these with knee socks.
As far as the black or brown issue, I think the old rule of thumb is that brown or black is fine for daytime wear, for evenings and formal only black will do. Always make sure your sporran and belt match your shoes. If I'm mistaken someone will correct me.
