    Question on footwear

Well, as some of you already know, based on another thread, that I have my kilt (Gunn Tartan) on order. I've been doing a lot of reading on this forum since I joined prior to ordering the kilt so that I could try to wear it properly. But I still have some confusion/questions on footwear.

I plan to wear my kilt whenever I can. I'd like to have shoes that are quite comfortable (such as the sneakers I wear now with my (gasp) shorts and jeans, but I also want something that looks good with a kilt. I've seen many pictures of guys wearing boots, but to me..they don't seem that comfortable. I recently bought a pair of rockport shoes (http://shop.rockport.com/product/ind...ductId=1816825) that I thought would work out well, but now I'm having second thoughts. btw...the pair I bought are a dark grey, not tan.

So...I'm seeking advice as to what people wear day in and day out. Please offer suggestions, and if you can point me to photo's, that would be even better.

Lastly, I was always under the impression that the shoes had to be black, or at least a very dark color, in order to look right. I'm wondering what the thoughts are on brown. Is that acceptable?
Here is what I have: http://www.rockcreek.com/images_products/b_item796.jpg

This is my prefered casual look(s), but I also have a nice pair of brown dress shoes (belt and sporran that match), and some black oxfords (from Payless ).

If all else fails, just cruise throught the member's galleries and see what everyone is wearing. Be sure to allot a day or two for both of Hamish's galleries. His IMFF photo gallery is great for accessorising ideas.

Brown is fine. I wear a pair of black crosstrainers by New Balance most of the time. Very comfortable and they look good.

I go with the philosphy of wear what makes you comfortable. I tend to lean towards the more traditional when in formal/semiformal attire i.e. Ghillie Brogues, but I know a lot of folks on this site have issues with Ghillies. For my more casual look I go with Sketchers or Doc Martins for the look and the comfort. Check out my gallery, I have picture of the shoes I wear when in casual attire.

For dressier days I wear brown Ecco low tops or black Birkenstock shoes (I think they were called "Lawrence") and I always wear those with kilt hose. For more casual or every-day I wear brown Birkenstock hiking boots, black Harley-Davidson jump boots or some shoes I just got from Keen, brown Chukas or black Bronx Mesh. With the boots I wear socks pushed down or rolled unless it's cold and I want more warmth. The H-D boots weren't that comfortable which is why I've replaced them with the Keens. The Birkenstock hikers are about the most comfortable boots I've ever had and the Keens are a pretty close second although they aren't as tough since they're not intended for serious hiking. Just make sure your boots, belt and sporran are the same color for a good look. Like Colin said, check Ham's galleries for the definative look.

I have played safe for years. I stayed with only black shoes and boots. But I have since added a pair of brown shoes to my stable with matching brow belts

My Blundstone Boots are my favourite pairs right now. They are just so comfortable. I have worn them almost every since I got them last summer. EXcellent day to day boots.

Your Grey Shoes whoul work well in general, because I can't see the shoes clashing with the Gunn Tartan. Just carefully match your Hose with the shoes and shirts, you are going to have 1 smart outfit.

For casual wear those Rockports would be fine. I have an ancient pair of Rockports I wear at the store because they're so comfortable and I'm standing on a cement floor all day.
Another suggestion is to match the shoe colour with the belt and sporran colour.

If the Rockports aren't working, switch to steel-toed boots. I stress that: steel-toed. Nothing else will do. All the cool kids are wearing them. It is the only way to become a productive member of society.

Loafers? No. Sneakers? Definitely not. High-tops? Get off this board. Cleats? N-- I'll consider it.

And galoshes? Only in the rain.
