While I appreciate the suggestions so far (and all are acceptable songs to sing to my kids), the point is that I'm looking for a gender apropriate song. Not trying to be sexist, but since I sing my daughter a song that can not be sung to a boy (without rewriting over half of the song - it is Tom Waits' Coney Island Baby for anyone who cares), I kind of wanted a song for my son that really can't be sung to a girl so each has their "special" song. "Beautiful Boy" is the best possibility so far, but it still would be no real trick to just change it to Beautiful Girl.
As for appropriateness, yes I would like it to not be on the edge for a "special song", but as for songs that I have sung to my daughter, they include "Carmilita" by Warren Zevon (...and I'm all strung out on Heroin, on the outskirts of town), granted I've stopped now that my daughter is old enough to remember words.
But then my dad (Southern Baptist Minister) used to sing "Long Black Veil" and "Banks of the Ohio" among others to me.

Man you have set some tough guides here and I suppose "A Boy Named Sue" is out of the question...
I'll ponder it and take a look thru some of my music, got some ole folk stuff that may have something in it.
