Need a song
OK, completely off topic, but I need help.
I am about to have a son (in about a week). I have always sung lots of different songs to my daughter. I just realized that one song is really only appropriate for a girl, which is ok that just became "her" song. However, I now feel that I need a song that is special for my son, and for the life of me I can't come up with anything. Closest I can get is Cats in the Cradle, and I really would like a more up beat (theme not tempo).
Anyone got a suggestion. Think of a song that you imagine a father (or gender nutral parent) singing to a son. And let me know who does it, so if I don't know it, I can find a copy.

I have a boy and girl, and I sing to both of 'em, too.
I sing Elton John's "This song's for you," or whatever the actual title is, to both my kids. The one that goes, "And you can tell everybody that this is your song, it may be quite simple but now that it's done, I hope you don't mind, (I hope you don't mind) that I put down in words... how wonderful life is, now you're in the world..." Always a nice sentiment, I think. LOL, Sir Elton was also a guy singing to another guy, though probably not the way you had in mind.
There's also a country song by George Strait, that has the lyrics: "Let me tell you a secret, about a father's love... a secret that my daddy said was just between us... Daddies don't just love their children every now and then, it's a love without end, aman." (Damn, I'm getting teary just thinking about it!)
My kids like upbeat songs- my son favors country, my daughter favors Broadway... I don't worry too much about the gender of the songs so much as whether it puts them to sleep- my oldest daughter would be out within a couple bars of "Uninvited' by Alanis Morrisette, my son's a sucker for "Part of Your World" from, of all things, the Little Mermaid.

I always enjoyed hearing the song "Forever Young" sung to me by my father when I was little.

The first song I sang to my son was Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) by John Lennon. It was used in the movie Mr. Holland's Opus. It's a great song and it teaches a few good lessons as well.

Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)
by John Lennon
Close your eyes
Have no fear
The monster's gone
He's on the run and your daddy's here
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way
It's getting better and better
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Out on the ocean sailing away
I can hardly wait
To see you come of age
But I guess we'll both just have to be patient
'Cause it's a long way to go
A hard row to hoe
Yes it's a long way to go
But in the meantime
Before you cross the street
Take my hand
Life is what happens to you
While you're busy making other plans
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way
It's getting better and better
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Beautiful boy
Darling, darling, darling
Darling Sean
