Our local kilt emporium, Arizona Kilts, carries the American National tartan & it does indeed make for a great looking kilt. Graeme has been kind enough to loan me the use of such a kilt on a couple of occasions while I was waiting for my clan tartan kilt to arrive from bonnie Scotland & it's definitely on my list to get a kilt in the American National tartan.

Here's a link to a nice photo of a kilt with the American National tartan at the Arizona Kilts website (no, that's not me, which is why it's a nice photo).

AND there's NAY green in it, laddie!!! Strictly red, white & blue. You either need to adjust your screen colors or get a new monitor.

    Retro Red,

That is very odd. The American National tartan swatch I obtained from the House of Edgar last month has a green stripe. I wonder why the tartan shown in the picture you provided doesn't have a green stripe?

I agree, Bill, that is kind of odd... though I can understand why green would be added to the American National tartan - as recent lobbyist scandals have once again proven that greenbacks are what our government runs on!!!

Tell you what, I should be stopping by Arizona Kilts, today, & I'll ask Graeme what mill his American National tartan comes from.

    Stay tuned...

Well, I didn't get over to Arizona Kilts before they closed today (I was out to late last night & they close early on Saturday), but I did track down what I believe is the source for the American National tartan sans green that Arizona Kilts is using.

    Check out this link -

    http://americannationaltartan.com/index.asp

This is identical to the tartan I've worn a couple of times & I'll tell ya, it's a great lookin' kilt! And personally, I think it's better looking than the House of Edgar version.

I'll still try to confirm with Graeme that this is the source.

    Retro Red,

The American National tartan.com website is run by Houston Kiltmakers at kiltmakers.com.

The House of Edgar states this about their American National tartan: "Specially created tartan in patriotic colours, designed in conjunction with Wm Houston and available under licence from The House of Edgar."

So, one would think they are the same tartan. Furthermore, if you look closely at the sample swatch of the AN tartan at American National tartan.com website ( http://americannationaltartan.com/tartans.asp ), you will see that it appears to have a green stripe.

My monitor shows a green stripe also, so would have to agree with you.

    Mmmmm, tasty crow!

Pass the salsa, it'll help the crow go down...

I went to Arizona Kilts today to pick up my new kilt pin & asked Graeme what mill his American National kilts come from & it is the House of Edgar. He then brought out a plaid in the American National & sure enough there is green in it. It's very subtle & you've got to look close, but it's there. For me, at a distance the green disappears into the blue.

    Sorry for the confusion.

Here I'd worn the thing a couple of times & didn't even notice the green, which either says a lot about my powers of observation or how subdued the green is.

Anyway, I still think it's a great looking tartan & wouldn't mind having a kilt made with it, someday.
