    Is it just a trick of light, or is there a white line near the selvedge that does not repeat elsewhere in the pattern?

    You are correct. That is a "selvedge stitch" (at least that's what I call it) That's how the mill handles the edge unless the tartan is special ordered. I'm looking for a brown sharpie to try and subdue the thread a bit but they are apparently very rare.

    or is it...

    Just a very tall sett patten?

    What's rare? The stitch, or brown sharpies? You can find a brown sharpie at Staple's (if that's what you were referring to.)

    If you are looking for a brown marker, look in the furniture polish section at Wallyworld, they have a furniture scratch repair kit with magic markers in 3 shades of brown.

    They might work, try it in a hidden area first.
