the great hose debate, for me its a question of mood, today i felt off white, tommorrow who knows.

marine reunions do have a tendency to get a little out of hand, of coarse we are all 60 or older, but still one should always go armed to these events. you never know about them damn flashbacks.

I don't mind the white (or cream-colored) hose either but I do agree that some tartans looks better with darker hose (of a complimentary color of course). In fact, I'm waiting on a delivery from UPS (right now) of a pair of dark olive hose that I purchased last week from Sierra Trading Post (thanks again for the link, Iolaus).

BTW, what or whose hand-knitted hose were you (thescot) referring to? Neither mcvarmit nor McMurdo appear to be wearing hand-knitted hose (I could be wrong), which is (99% of the time) all I ever wear (excluding my wedding which was obviously formal):

The hose I am wearing is the standard fare that you get with rental places they are not hand knit hose, the pair in question were a gift from my brother, to wear at his wedding.

I know have 4 pairs of kilt hose none of them hand knit as yet however the price difference is such that I might look into it, as mine cost about $40.00 each.

I ordered my own hand-knitted hose from Everything Scottish, a shop in Linville, NC at the foot of Grandfather Mountain about 8 or 9 years ago. I had to make all kinds of drawings of my foot along with measurements of the ankle, calf, height, etc. Since I have a very long and narrow foot--as well as being about 6' - 3" tall--I went for a custom made pair, and they do fit better than anything else I own.

You can also order some through the Scottish Tartans Museum at http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/hose.htm, but be ware that they are very pricey. the good part is that they really do fit you and not some theorized person who does not actually exist. I've found that "one size fits most" means "one size fits no one."

It's kind of like men's dress shirts: order by collar and sleeve length and pay for the fit, or buy the S-M-L and live with what you get!

I already own a lot of hand-knitted hose (HKH herein) so I'm not in the market for more (at the moment). And yes, they certainly are more expensive than "standard" hose. However, I feel that the higher price of HKH is on par with their quality, comfort and style (i.e. you get what you pay for). I'm a size 11.5 so a nice pair of HKH usually runs anywhere from $60-90 (depending on where I buy them).

FYI, Rocky Roeger at USA Kilts sells HKH (I've purchased several from him in-store) at a very reasonable price ($60). From what I can tell, the main difference (other than price) between what Rocky sells and what Matt Newsome sells is that the latter's product is a custom-made HKH (requiring measurements) while the former's HKH is imported from Scotland (and offered in standard hosiery sizes). I can't compare them beyond that; I've never even been to the Scottish Tartans Museum Gift Shop (and I'm certainly no hosiery expert) but I'm certain what Matt sells is of highest craftsmanship (like Rocky, he wouldn't sell them otherwise) and thus the price he charges ($125) is fair and justified. Personally, I prefer the style of what Rocky sells.

To get back on topic, the point in my previous post (though I wasn't trying to nitpick) was that neither mcvarmit nor McMurdo appeared to be wearing HKH in their photos...at least not that I could see. Anyway, I gather from your reply that you were referring to your own HKH (sorry, my mistake) and not what was pictured in the photos of the other gentlemen (who looked just fine in my opinion).

BTW, I don't know anyone who wears white (or cream-colored) HKH with formal attire nor have I ever seen that in person (maybe I live in a vacuum?). However, I have seen photos of guys wearing HKH with formal attire...for me, the jury's still out on whether or not I'll ever do the same (probably not).
