Family support does mean so much. If my wife had not encouraged me, I would never have worn a kilt. Having first worn a kilt when I was about 40, now at age 56 I own seventeen with another one on order and wear them most days. To think I missed out on such comfort for so many years.
I have an adult daughter from a previous marriage and although I only see her very occasionally, she does expect me to be wearing a kilt when she sees me and says that I look cool in a black kilt.

I know how you feel, I have two daughters who will not be seen in public with me when I am wearing mine. My youngest daughter thinks it's really neat that her dad wears a kilt. As for my wife she is behind me 100% and she was the one who bought me my kilt

    Talking Spousal Support....

When we did our full dress kilts on the cruise my wife was not the biggest supporter but had to agree we looked good.
When I told her that I was buying kilts from Stillwater she just shook her head and said nothing.
Then the kilts came in the mail. I told her last week that I was wearing the kilt when we went out to a large family dinner. She strongly resisted but I told her that I planned to wear it often so she might as well get used to it now. My 18yr old son cryed foul that I got to be kilted and he did not. To make a long story short we both wore kilts and had fun. Even my wife had to admit we looked good. Now she is the one setting out the kilt accessories when we go out. As for my son he has kiltnapped my Black Watch kilt and has vowed to keep it.
My wife asked me this morning if there was a traditional wear for her to wear while I am in my kilt. Any suggestions?
    Thanks...Al

    Congratulations!

She could add a tartan sash to an existing outfit. If you have or order a nice wool kilt, consider getting her a matching sash. Some of our advertisers, or your favorite highland retailer, may have them in stock.

When you're wearing the Irish National, she could use SWK's fly plaid or piper's plaid as a shawl---see various pix for some ideas.

A "kilted" skirt in tartan can go with or without a sash/shawl. Straight/a-line skirts work in tartan, too. For evening wear, the long "hostess" kilted skirt is very elegant.

    Tweed always looks nice, too.

Some pictures: Scottish Tartans Museum shop Scroll down for sashes/shawls.
USAK skirts in PV or wool.

Click through the link at the top of the page for Kiltstore.net, they offer a discount for Xmarks members. See their Ladies wear section for loads of ideas.

We can say, "I don't care what anyone thinks." But the reality is we care what those we care about think. That's awesome....

Of COURSE your eldest daughter won't be seen with you in public - but it isn't the kilt. It's 'DAD" that's the problem. Teenage daughters are mortified by their fathers, even by them being in the same room, let alone being 'oddly' dressed.
Dad's are embarassing in a suit, shorts & T-shirt, overalls, swimming trunks,(God forbid!), jeans, whatever. (It's part of the joys of fatherhood to be a source of total embarrassment to one's teenaged children). However, in a few years time, you'll be back on the A-list once more. Cheer up.
