Back Support
I'm sure this has been discussed here somewhere before. Has anyone noticed how much support the kilt and belt provide to your back? The other day I woke up with a slightly sore back, and when I put on my kilt and belt, the soreness disappeared, only to come back when I took everything off that evening. Seems to me the kilt would be a lot more fashionable than a back brace.

Yup, that has come up before. I've noticed a traditional type kilt gives a great amount of support. Pretty nice bonus, isn't it.

Therapeutic Kilting
Perhaps the wide belt more than the kilt...?
I sit for a living. Wear kilts to work. Kilt provides the freedom, kilt belt provides the back support.
Hmmm....are we talking a doctor's Rx to wear a kilt to work here...??
Any kilted docs out there?

I noticed that with my Stillwater Heavy. Back hurts less when I am wearing it.

Even without the belt the rise of a kilt helps give extra back support. The belt adds to that.

I've been an advocate of this for several years. The full rise of the traditional kilt is a definite theraputic bonus. It is most noticeable when taking the kilt off after wearing it all day. There is a pronounced and sudden release" that takes place... like your innards are gonna fall out unless you put it back on!
I guess the answer is... don't take it off!

Then if we can only get insurance plans to cover it...

In the long run, back support belts make you weaker, eventually you need one all the time.

If you have a sore lower back, consider weight training, especially deadlifts with proper form. You will be amazed how quickly you feel better. I did, anyway!
Quoted from NIOSH (Nat'l Institute for Occupational Safety & Health):
"(NIOSH...), does not recommend the use of back belts to prevent injuries among workers who have never been injured.* If you or your workers are wearing back belts as protective equipment against back injury, you should be aware of the lack of scientific evidence supporting their use."

Just another two cents about the support that kilts provide. If you play the pipes and are playing a hard reed, a good tight kilt with a snug belt makes it easier to play because you have something to push against! Lots of benefits.
