My calves are also large - 19". I have been having good luck on slowly stretching them. Look for my post in the general catagory under Barbershop talk, I talk about my method there.

I was at a local sports store last night, (Chick's) and I may have stumbled upon a partial solution for those of us with Thunder Calves.
I was talking to the clerk (an older gent, knew his stuff!) and I told him my problem. He suggested Baseball or football special sox, as they are made to go over shin guards and are hence, larger. So we went looking, and most were wierd colors or strange knitting patterns.
But I bought one plain dark green pair made by Twin City Knitting. They fit my 19" calves right nice!
The ones I got say they are "PB13-XLG"
I found a web-site for them www.twincityknitting.com but haven't found this model number yet.
Might be worth a try to check out these sox in your local sporting goods store.
