The closest thing to what the highlanders REALLY wore (in that period):

Is it still buy 1 get 1 entry fee on opening weekend?

I don't think it would very difficult to get everyone together from the Sonoran Scotsmen to go to the Ren Faire and have pints and run amuck. Years ago we used to do this all the time, but I don't think we've gone in 2 years. I'll be at Estrella War in the beginning of February, and as long as it's not that weekend, i should be good to go. We can talk about it more though, as the time gets closer.

Otherwise, the Smoke and Fire "Gillie Brogues" pattern works OK too. For the price (usually, about $6), it is workable.

Woodsheal and I exchanged some PMs on HISTORIC shoes. He referred me to these:
http://www.personal.utulsa.edu/~marc...OES/SHOE57.HTM
http://www.personal.utulsa.edu/~marc...OES/SHOE55.HTM
http://www.personal.utulsa.edu/~marc...OES/SHOE56.HTM
Those also are similar to some illustrations in history books on the "dark age" Scotland (the term "dark age" refers more to OUR lack of knowledge -thanks to Vikings- about them than anything about the people of the 5th to 11th centuries -using the largest dating brackets).
He also pointed out that Scottish footwear didn't change much and the SAME shoe styles are described in the 6th century as in the 17th (and 18th)!
He also said that the Smoke and Fire "Gillie Brogues" look like NOTHING he has seen in Scottish finds.
So, if you want ACCURATE historic shoes/brogues, look at the ones "over-the-counter" in Woodsheal's post or the pattern above.
-By the way, our "Woodsheal" is VERY highly respected and authoritative figure in Jacobite/Highlander reenactment circles. His "opinion" usually has an ENORMOUS amount of research behind it. When in doubt or "don-know," I lean to following his opinion.

I saw these on a site somebody posted here a few days ago. Here it is - http://www.caledoniancreations.com/B...sh-Brogues.htm.
I actually saw some very old shoes looking very similar in the National Museum in Scotland so they are pretty genuine for a re-enactment if that is important. Don't know if you'd want to be spending that kind of money though. There are a few leatherworkers here who could tackle them I'm sure.

None of those links in your last post appear to be working, Macwage.
Also, here is a pattern for those pucker-toed shoes you posted.

Links fixed. I got hasty in "cut and paste" and the actual link got truncated in the process.
