It is a bittersweet time. I was ready, I knew it when it was my time, you have realized that as well. Still it was hard to let go. Had serious tears in my eyes when I got "piped over the side". It will always be a part of your life that you will be close to. I found it quite hard to think that my squadron would carry on with out missing a beat. Then I thought back and that is how we trained them, to carry on. As we all have to do. To paraphrase what MacDougall said, "Carry on soldier, the watch as been relieved." There is a certain sense of unique pride to add (Ret.) to the end of your signature. We who came before and those who will come after and those that enjoy the freedom we helped to protect, thank you! I am an "old salt" but I believe the our brother Marines say it best, SEMPER FI!

Give me a note if you plan on coming through the DFW Metro area.
I will owe you a LARGE beer...
Thank you for your service and sacrifice. You leave it in good hands.

You've more than done your duty; it's time to let others carry on the watch. Thanks for all you've done, although I know that you never completely retire from the military.
You'll never completely become a civilian, especially after all those years. I only wore the uniform for five years, and I haven't worn it in over sixteen years, but I still respond to the drill commands.

Congratulations. I've got oh, about 14 years to go 'til 20. Probably will do more, if the knees hang with me.
