It's a compensation thing. I wear a belt that is 1" . I don't think that there are really hard a and fast rules reguarding belts. Dressy = larger, casual = smaller. Even our Hamish recommends thinner belts at times. As for the fear of showing up on the kilt DON'T list, don't worry been there they didn't take away any of my kilts as punishment.

I don't think a 1 3/4" belt in itself will get you a "Kilt Don't." But I'd still keep your eyes open for something at least 2" wide.
As Moosedog pointed out, I think your individual proportions will play into it as well. The taller you are, the more a thin belt will stand out as, well, a thin belt.

My favorite is a full 4"; but then I'm 6' 3", 250 lbs.
